Boo as expected my favourite watchface is messed up now, why have they tinkered with it yet running a contest for watchfaces? Unless the people designing knew something we didn't about the update...

No problem to syncrhonize custom Watchfaces when you replace the .bin of an official watchface :).
Faded Watchface on my Mi Band 4 is Modified (Battery percentage instead of battery icon) !

How do you do that? The one I use has the time in the middle and it's just a couple of dots..

Go in "Profile" -> "Mi Smart Band 4" -> "Band display settings".
Disable Bluetooth.
Synchronize one Official Watchface (it will download it and ask you to enable Bluetooth, don't enable it !).
Open your Files Application and go in "Android" -> "data" -> "com.xiaomi.hm.health" -> "files" -> "watch_skin_local".
Open the Watchface folder (for me it was "3twFUMCxR5hTSN2f00GPgszD2xzOfz01MU6QlONk") and replace the .bin file by your Custom Watchface (don't forget to rename it like the Official Watchface .bin file, for me "3twFUMCxR5hTSN2f00GPgszD2xzOfz01MU6QlONk.bin" !).
Enable Bluetooth.
Return in Mi Fit Application and synchronize again the Official Watchface .
Be happy :) !

Still the same as my picture, followed the instructions to the letter.... I guess you don't close the sync panel in mi fit when you sync it first with BT off, I didn't renamed the file etc then went back to Mi Fit and hit sync again.

Rename your custom watchface .bin file like the official .bin file and replace the official .bin with your custom watchface. Then go in Mi Fit Application and synchronize the watchface, it will synchronize your custom watchface :).
