Hey guys, is there a way to add the miband4's music player controls to the miband3 through custom firmware? that's the only feature I think the miband3 lacks

Do the 3 and 4 share any hardware? not the screen obviously but what about the processor? could code from 4 be ported to the 3?

NO.
If it was possible, then Xiaomi wouldn't launch the mi band 4. And music control isn't the only feature that mi band 4 has.

Its Not possible because Mi band 3 dont have a touch screen. Instead it has touch sensors around its screen.(saw that in a teardown).

Mi band 3 have a touch screen !!! The Mi Band 3 has the same touch screen as the Mi Band 4. The control of the display is the same, you can see the Timer function, etc.

Actually it does not. Mi band 3 does have a touch-sensitive frame underneath the plastic screen. But we can't call it a touch screen. It only supports vertical & horizontal swipes. That's why when you want to access a specific section such as heart rate, you have to touch and hold a button which another separate touch function. So, even if you could get music control inside mi band 3 somehow, (although it's not possible!) you can't really touch the center of the screen and make the pause/volume button work. ^ ^

The frame forms a capacitive part of the entire top cover. Try touching the buttons, such as "Timer" and others.
